A car accident happens in about two seconds, but what it does to your body can last a lot longer than that. Because of the high speeds and large amounts of force involved in car accidents, drivers and passengers often suffer injuries. While the causes for a car accident are many, the severity of injuries can range from minor to disabling and even life-threatening. Whether you walked away from the crash a little sore or you’re staring down weeks in the hospital, the force involved in even a routine fender-bender can do real damage.
At Jason Stone Injury Lawyers, we know that your auto accident injuries can leave you unable to work and in need of expensive medical treatments. That’s why we’re here to help take care of your post-accident needs. Call us or fill out our contact form, and we’ll help you sort out medical care and next steps.
Common Injury Types
When you call us, our attorneys are ready to help right away. We’re familiar with all types of auto accident injuries, including:
- Cuts and Lacerations
Auto accidents often cause windshields and windows to break. Broken glass can cut drivers and passengers, causing severe bleeding. - Broken Bones
During auto accidents, vehicle interiors can cave in and pin the limbs of drivers and passengers. The force of the impact can cause bones to break. - Head and Neck Injuries
When fast-moving vehicles stop suddenly due to car accidents, the force can cause victims’ heads and necks to move outside the normal range of motion. The hyperextension and force can cause whiplash and brain injuries. - Facial Injuries
The force from car accidents can cause drivers and passengers to hit the seat, dashboard, or steering wheel in front of them. Even with airbags, the force of the impact can break victims’ noses and teeth. These injuries usually occur when the driver is distracted, speeding, fatigued or drunk, as they do not hit the brakes in time or at all. - Back Injuries
The lower back is vulnerable to damage in car accidents, as it may be unable to cope with the force of the impact. The same hyperextension motion that causes neck injuries can also cause lower back injuries. - Soft tissue injuries
Sprains, strains, and torn ligaments don’t show up on an X-ray the way a broken bone does, which is part of why insurance companies sometimes downplay them. They’re still real injuries that can take months to heal.
Injuries That Don’t Always Make the List, But Should
The five injuries above are the ones people picture when they think “car accident injury.” Plenty of the injuries we help clients through don’t get talked about as much, even though they can be just as serious, sometimes more so.
- Internal injuries
Blunt force from a steering wheel, seatbelt, or dashboard can damage organs or cause internal bleeding without leaving an obvious mark. These are some of the most dangerous injuries precisely because they’re not visible right away. - Chest injuries
Seatbelts save lives, but the same belt that keeps you in your seat can fracture ribs or the sternum under enough force. Airbag deployment can do the same. - Spinal cord injuries
These are a step beyond a typical back injury. Damage to the spinal cord itself can affect sensation and movement below the injury site, and in the most severe cases, lead to permanent paralysis. - Psychological injuries
A serious crash doesn’t only leave marks on the body. Anxiety, and in some cases PTSD, are common after a traumatic accident, especially one that involved a serious injury or a close call. - Burns
Less common, but they happen, usually from a deployed airbag, a hot engine component, or in rarer cases, a post-crash fire. - Knee, leg, and shoulder injuries
The dashboard and steering wheel are directly in front of a driver’s knees and shoulders. A sudden stop can drive the knee into the dash or wrench a shoulder against a locked seatbelt.
Who These Injuries Happen To
Massachusetts tracks this in more detail than most people realize. According to 2025 data from the MassDOT Crash Data Portal’s serious injury dashboard, the state recorded 2,628 serious motor vehicle injuries that year. Of those:
- drivers made up the largest share by far, at 1,421 injuries, or roughly 54%
- passengers accounted for 384 (about 15%)
- motorcycle operators for 380 (about 14%)
- pedestrians for 274 (about 10%)
The remaining share, a little over 6%, was spread across bicyclists, motorcycle passengers, and riders of personal conveyances like e-scooters.
When These Injuries Happen Most
The same MassDOT dashboard breaks serious injuries down by month, and the pattern is hard to miss. Summer is consistently the most dangerous stretch of the year on Massachusetts roads. In the 2025 data
- June with 255 serious injuries
- July with 283 serious injuries
- August with 278 serious injuries
Each ran well above the monthly average, with July the single worst month of the year. The quietest month was February, at 138, with March close behind at 162 serious crashes.
