Self-balancing skateboards, often referred to as hoverboards, are some of the hottest consumer electronics on the market today. Dozens of manufacturers produce their own versions of the devices, which can feature flashing lights and even Bluetooth speakers that connect to users’ smartphones.
But hoverboards aren’t all fun and games. Some riders have been hospitalized with severe injuries from falls, and recent reports indicate that some hoverboard models can catch fire while charging or explode during use.
If you or a loved one were injured on a hoverboard or were injured due to a hoverboard safety defect, Jason Stone Injury Lawyers wants to help. Hoverboard Fires and Explosion Risks
In December 2015, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced it was investigating hoverboard-related fires across the country. Reports indicate that various hoverboard models have caught fire or exploded while charging and during use. CPSC engineers believe battery pack compatibility issues with chargers may be to blame.
Many hoverboard models are produced by relatively unknown factories in Asia and don’t adhere to any specific safety standards. And while some major retailers have pledged to sell only devices with batteries and chargers that meet well-known safety certifications, the devices as a whole may not be certified as safe. As a result of these concerns, the devices have been banned by cities, college campuses, and more than 60 airlines.
Hoverboard Fall Injuries
CPSC chairman Elliott Kaye issued a statement urging consumers to take caution while riding hoverboards. Despite their “self-balancing” nature, the devices present similar injury risks to skateboards, such as:
- Internal injuries
As hoverboard popularity continues to grow, the CPSC is continuing to monitor an increasing number of injury reports from hospital emergency rooms across the country.
Safety Tips to Help Prevent Hoverboard Injuries
The attorneys at Jason Stone Injury Lawyers suggest you keep a few safety tips in mind to help reduce the risk of a hoverboard injury or malfunction:
- Only purchase a hoverboard from a familiar, reputable retailer. Many generic or knockoff brands available at mall kiosks, flea markets, and fly-by-night websites are cheaply produced and offer no way for consumers to contact manufacturers if a problem occurs.
- Wear safety gear while riding a hoverboard, including a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards.
- Don’t leave a charging hoverboard unattended.
- Charge and store your hoverboard in a clean, dry area away from any items that may catch fire.
- Avoid riding your hoverboard around moving motor vehicles, in crowded areas, or in unfamiliar areas.
